Born in Kuala Lumpur in 1941, he graduated from the Kuala Lumpur Day Teachers’ Training College. He taught Chinese and Malay languages in primary and secondary schools for 36 years (and served as vice-principal), and was awarded the Service Excellence Award.

He received a bachelor’s degree in science from the University of Malaya in 1979, a master’s degree in Chinese from the University of Malaya in 2011, and a doctorate in Chinese from the University of Tunku Abdul Rahman in 2017. After retiring from the school in 1996, he served as the editor-in-chief of a publishing house for 20 years. In his spare time, he wrote radio dramas and educational radio scripts under the pen names of Bicheng, engaged in literary creation and translation, and compiled workbooks, reference books, tool books and textbooks for primary and secondary schools. He also wrote columns for various newspapers.

He has published more than 80 literary books, including textbooks on primary school moral education, local studies, and Chinese language for secondary schools. He also writes in Malay. His Malay short story collection “Southward Journey” was published by the National Language and Literature Bureau in 1997. He has translated Malay classical works such as “Vince Abdullah’s Travels in Kelantan” into Chinese, and translated Bing Xin’s “Stars”, Lu Xun’s “Blessings”, and “The Four Great Inventions of China” into Malay. He has won many literary awards, including the 15th Malaysian Chinese Literature Award. He has compiled about 40 bilingual or trilingual dictionaries. In addition to Kamus Perdana, Kamus Kembangan, Kamus Idaman Poket and Kamus Titian Bahasa are all widely welcomed by the society.
